From Vienna's main railway station, the journey takes you directly to the heart of eastern Slovakia and to Košice in one night. The city with its medieval roots has smartened up for the Cultural Capital year of 2013. In the old town, only ten minutes away from the railway station, the influence of the Austro-Hungarian Empire can still be clearly felt and there are countless Gothic structures to be discovered. Then, there is the singing fountain in the park and Košice's gold treasure, a collection of gold coins. For no good reason, Slovakia is a country that is not necessarily at the top of the tourist map, despite the fact that it is the geographical centre of Europe.
One advantage of this is that there, one can still feel like a discoverer. For example, near Košice you can explore the Jasovská Cave with its stony waterfalls and medieval inscriptions. Many other caves, gorges and karst formations can also be found in the neighbouring Slovak Karst National Park. After a day of hiking, the best thing to do is to enjoy the hearty Slovakian food in Košice, after which one will sleep particularly tight on the night train back to Vienna.
